How to Exclude Z-Wave Devices with SmartThings Hub: A Step-by-Step Guide
Learn how to exclude Z-Wave devices from your SmartThings Hub with these simple steps. Ensure successful removal and avoid connectivity issues.
How to Exclude Z-Wave Devices
Z-Wave devices must be placed into exclusion mode before they can be removed or reset from a hub such as a SmartThings Hub. This process usually requires a physical interaction with the device, such as pressing a button or a switch sequence defined by the manufacturer.
Note: You must be within range of the SmartThings Hub and have physical access to the device you want to exclude.
Remove and Exclude a Connected Device in SmartThings
When removing a Z-Wave device from the SmartThings app, the hub automatically enters exclusion mode.
Steps
-
Open the SmartThings app.
-
From the Home screen, tap:
- Menu → Devices
-
Tap:
- More Options (⋮) → Edit
-
Select the device you want to remove.
-
Tap:
- Delete Device
-
Confirm by tapping:
- Delete
-
The app will prompt you to complete the Z-Wave exclusion process on the physical device.
-
Follow the device manufacturer’s exclusion instructions.
Common examples include:
- Pressing a button once
- Holding a pairing button for several seconds
- Toggling a switch on/off multiple times
-
Once exclusion is successful, the SmartThings app will confirm the device has been removed.
-
Tap:
- Done
Important Notes
- Excluding a device also resets its Z-Wave network information.
- A device can usually only belong to one Z-Wave network at a time.
- If a device was previously paired with another hub, exclusion is often required before adding it to a new hub.
- Some devices may require factory reset steps in addition to exclusion.
Troubleshooting Tips
If exclusion fails:
- Move the device closer to the SmartThings Hub
- Verify the device has power
- Repeat the exclusion process several times
- Consult the device manual for exact exclusion instructions
- Reboot the SmartThings Hub if necessary
